Archbishop Claudio Celli, president of the Pontifical Council for Social Communications, said: "The theme chosen by the Holy Father for World Communications Day ["The Media: At the Crossroads Between Activism and Service. Seeking the Truth in Order to Share It With Others”] calls on us to reflect on the role played by the media and especially the increasing risk of their becoming self-absorbed and no longer tools at the service of truth -- something that is meant to be sought and shared."
World Communications day this year is May 4, 2008. The Sunday before Pentecost.

self-absorbed? pssssh. whatever. never.
I think the comment, Amanda, comes from how much of the media is uber-overly concerned with it's local area, while never opening our eyes to the atrocities happening around the world. I think the ratio goes like this:
(seriousness : airtime)
1 dead American - 5 minutes
10 dead Europeans - 5 minutes
100 dead Asians - 5 minutes
1000 dead Africans- 5 minutes
notice it next time you watch global news.
